Eduction & Workshops

I love sharing my expertise and knowledge with others.

Most recently I have developed and delivered Intimacy Best Practice seminars and workshops for the Directors and Editors Guild NZ, NZ Actors Equity Association, The NZ Fringe Festival, NZ Improv Festival, and multiple tertiary acting & film programs in Wellington, New Zealand.

Having been on the Oscar Award winning team that pioneered the field of motion capture performance, I’ve also developed character movement & motion capture education workshops and curricula for screen acting programs at the Vancouver Film School and The Bosa Centre for Film and Animation (Capilano University) in Vancouver, Canada, and have worked internationally as an educator and consultant.

I particularly like working with young adults and having taught for the NZ Ministry of Education I’ve completed Child Protection Training and am police vetted to work with children and vulnerable people.

“Carrie’s teaching ability is exceptional. I cannot think of a better word than ‘inspiring’ when I think of Carrie’s approach to sharing her art and giving space to others to make the work their own. Intimacy is such an important and at times delicate subject that Carrie’s compassion, empathy, clarity, and creativity not only serve her as an intimacy coordinator, but touch everyone she works with. We at Rapier Wit cannot wait for our next project to work with Carrie on.”

– DANIEL LEVINSON (artistic director, Rapier Wit)

“Carrie has impressed me with her high level of understanding and skills in communicating best practice around intimacy coordination. Her workshops do not just take students through protocols, she has designed them to help students, actors, creatives, and professional filmmakers to understand the principles and deeper ethos that underlies these practices. Students have benefited immensely from the sessions that she has run with us and have been able to move forward confident in their abilities to manage intimacy on location and set. I would like to include more of these sessions for undergraduates and wouldn’t hesitate to bring Carrie into further sessions for students at all levels of study.”

– DR. PAUL WOLFRAMM (associate professor – film programme, Victoria University of Wellington)

“Carrie worked with Tuuranga Acting Year One cohort during our Text Lab for 2023. I feel very lucky to have worked alongside Carrie’s experience, kindness and excellence during this process. Carrie contributed to the rich learning that was achieved through that project – and that now lives in us all.”

– ERINA DANIELS (senior tutor, Toi Whakaari)

“Our goal was to bring in more of the physical, creative and technical skills needed for the contemporary actor within the Motion Capture and Performance Capture fields. Working with Carrie, we built out our Mocap/Performance Capture curriculum for our One Year Program. To find Carrie was truly a boon for our student experience. Her depth of knowledge from all sides of the work was stellar. Watching Carrie in the classroom, it was clear she knew how to bring discipline and joy to the hands-on workshops. Not only did the students have a great experience but the learning outcomes were specific and clear. Based on the success of our curricular work, Carrie was also engaged by our Educational Administration to create an intensive curriculum focused for professionals in the industry.”

–  JENNIFER CLEMENT (head of department, acting for film & television, Vancouver Film School)

“For the past four years Carrie Thiel has introduced the principles of performing intimacy to our large first year acting course at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. Carrie tailors the content for our course in an engaging, relevant, and accessible way. The classes inspire our students, providing essential and actionable information for anyone involved in the performing arts.”

– JAMES WENLEY (senior lecturer – theatre programme, Victoria University of Wellington)

“Carrie was an excellent workshop facilitator. She held the room extremely well and created grounded, real connections with the participants who hung on her every word. I’d highly recommend Carrie for any workshops, mentorships or tutorials in this area.”

– TOM NOBLE (artists manager, NZ Fringe Festival)
